Commitment is a charged word for married folk. It is a word that makes some fearful, while others take it too lightly. At the beginning of our marriage, my wife and I would have fallen into the latter category. We took it too lightly, but I don’t believe we did it purposely. Things I’ve Learned in Twenty-Five Years of Marriage – Part 2

One of the first things that I learned when I got married was just how selfish both my wife and I were. Selfishness isn’t a trait that most people would attribute to themselves, but it is one that quickly makes itself evident. One of the things that my wife and I now say to one another, regarding selfishness, is “self-preservation is the first law of man.” We are hardwired to look out for ourselves first. Things I’ve Learned in Twenty-Five Years of Marriage – Part 1

Est. 1991 – That Went Fast

It is difficult to believe that October will mark my twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. I am married to a wonderful woman, who has been my best friend since soon after we met nearly thirty years ago. I can still remember the feeling I had when I asked her to marry me and she said yes. I can remember how nervous I was when I spoke to her mother (her father died when she was a teen) about wanting to marry her. I vividly remember the excited nervousness I had when she walked down the aisle of the church toward me. I remember our honeymoon in Cancun, closing on our first house (a major fixer-upper), the birth of our two children, family vacations, fighting and fussing, highs and lows (we’ve had a good share of both).
