There have been, absolutely, without doubt or question, times in our marriage when we’ve had arguments. You can call them arguments, disagreements, heated fellowship, or whatever, there have been times when my wife and I haven’t seen eye to eye on a matter.  [Read more…] about Things I’ve Learned in Twenty-Five Years of Marriage – Part 8

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:1-8

Ahhh, 1 Corinthians 13! The eternal wedding passage. I’m pretty sure that this passage was read at our wedding twenty-five years ago. And I’ve heard the passage read at countless weddings since then. The reaction is always the same. Heads nod. People say “amen” in assent. Everyone listens with hopeful expectation that the blissful couple will enjoy the truth of these verses. We just had no real idea what commitment in marriage meant, or what we were being asked to commit to as a couple. [Read more…] about Things I’ve Learned in Twenty-Five Years of Marriage – Part 3

8 Lessons Church Planting Has Taught Me – Part I

A+ Grade on Homework

I have learned a lot since January 2007 when Harvest Christian Fellowship began as a church plant. The truth is I never thought that I would be a church planter. I never sought to be a church planter. I never contemplated what being a church planter entailed or would be like until 2006. In spite of all of that, the undeniable truth is that being a church planter has taught me a lot about life, myself, leadership, faith, and people. There have been more surprises than I would have ever imagined, and I believe the lessons deserve to be shared with everyone. [Read more…] about 8 Lessons Church Planting Has Taught Me – Part I

How to Avoid Family Regrets

10489798_10152478974195042_1549298760305248385_n

I came across this picture on social media this past week. The message in the picture had an impact on me. I immediately thought of my two children; one now a sophomore in college and the other a sophomore in high school. I thought of my wife and the almost twenty-three years we have been married. As I thought of how quickly the time had passed between their birth and the present, I could hear the first verse of an old hymn…”Time is filled with swift transition, naught on earth unmoved can stand.” [Read more…] about How to Avoid Family Regrets
