When I first saw this video it became an instant favorite of mine and one that I share with the emerging leaders that I coach. In this video the late Dr. Stephen R. Covey illustrates a principle that is important for anyone looking to live and lead without losing themselves. It is vital to keep in mind the most important things, the big rocks, and make room for those things first.

Are you making room for the big rocks in your life first, or are you letting the smaller things crowd them out? Too often the burnout and fragmentation that we experience in life and leadership is a result of not making time for the most important things to get done in our lives. Another Coveyism, “sharpen the saw”, speaks of taking time to ensure that you are healthy revived and refreshed. A sharp saw cuts more and more efficiently than a dull saw. Ask yourself these questions if you find that your life is in disarray or headed there. How is your devotional life? Are you getting the rest and exercise that is needed? Are you making time for recreation? Family? Friends? Take time to list what your big rocks are and then sit down and ensure that you schedule around them. You will be the better for it if you do. Live one life.
